Tesla has instructed workers on its Cybertruck production line at the Austin, Texas factory to take three days off this week. The announcement comes amid reports of inconsistent schedules and potential challenges in Cybertruck production and demand.
Key Announcement
According to a company memo viewed by Business Insider, Tesla told employees they "do not need to report to work" on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week (December 3-5). The company assured workers that they would still receive eight hours of pay for each day they were scheduled to work.
The memo stated that regular operations would resume on Friday, December 6. However, Tesla noted that some employees would not follow the adjusted schedule, and those individuals would be notified separately. Tesla has not provided a reason for the schedule change and did not respond to requests for comment.
Worker Frustrations
This pause is the latest development in what workers describe as erratic schedules on the Cybertruck assembly line. Since late October, employees have reported instances where they arrived at work only to be sent home or reassigned to other tasks such as cleaning or training exercises.
One employee expressed disappointment over the lack of consistency, saying, "When I started at Tesla, you could expect to get overtime pay. Now I feel lucky to get 40 hours."
Production Challenges
Tesla has previously made adjustments to the Cybertruck production schedule. Earlier this year, the company shortened shifts on the assembly line, further fueling speculation about potential production hurdles.
Reports also suggest that Tesla may be working through its list of Cybertruck reservations faster than expected. Initially, the company recorded over 2 million reservations, but some customers canceled orders after pricing details were revealed. Several late reservation holders have already received their vehicles, which could indicate that demand is tapering off.
The Bigger Picture
The Cybertruck is a highly anticipated vehicle, but Tesla’s recent scheduling decisions hint at possible challenges with either production or demand. While the company has not disclosed any long-term changes, the pause has raised questions about the vehicle’s future.
For now, operations on the Cybertruck line are expected to resume Friday, though it remains unclear whether these adjustments are part of a larger shift in Tesla’s strategy.
