Reddit Removes Links to Luigi Mangione’s Manifesto Amid Backlash

Overview

Reddit has started removing posts linking to the manifesto of Luigi Mangione, the alleged shooter of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The platform says the action aligns with its longstanding content policies, but the move has sparked frustration among users.

What Happened

Luigi Mangione, 26, was charged with murder earlier this week, and his manifesto has been circulating online. Journalist Ken Klippenstein published the full 261-word document on his Substack, which some Reddit users attempted to share. These links were swiftly removed—either by Reddit staff or subreddit moderators.

Posts from popular subreddits like r/interestingasfuck, r/witchesVsPatriarchy, and r/antiwork were among those deleted. A post linking the manifesto in r/interestingasfuck had nearly 20,000 upvotes before being removed.

Reddit’s Explanation

A Reddit spokesperson confirmed that content involving “manifestos related to violent acts” breaches the platform’s policies on violent content. These rules prohibit material that encourages or glorifies violence, although exceptions can be made for educational or newsworthy purposes with appropriate context.

Moderators of subreddits also received direct instructions from Reddit to enforce these rules. One moderator of r/popculturechat shared, “Reddit has told us we are not allowed to post Luigi Mangione’s manifesto, even if it is reported neutrally.”

Community Reaction

The removal has drawn backlash from Reddit users, with some accusing the platform of selective censorship. Critics argue that Reddit enforces its rules inconsistently, focusing on high-profile incidents while allowing harmful content like misogyny or racism to persist.

A commenter in r/popculturechat voiced frustration: “Reddit’s admins seem more aligned with people like Brian Thompson than with the rest of us, caring only about violence against the elite.”

Why It Matters?

This controversy comes amid growing online sympathy for Mangione in some circles, where he has been painted as a “folk hero” by those critical of the American healthcare system. The incident has reignited conversations about the impact of insurance denials on public health and the ethical challenges of content moderation on social media platforms.

The Bigger Picture

Reddit’s decision reflects the challenges platforms face in balancing free speech with responsible content moderation. The debate underscores the tension between corporate policies, public sentiment, and ethical questions surrounding violent acts and their aftermath.
