Massapequa Teen Dies Suddenly at Hockey Charity Game

Overview

A Long Island community is mourning the tragic death of 17-year-old Connor Kasin, a senior at Massapequa High School, who collapsed during a high school hockey charity game on Saturday night. Despite immediate efforts to save him, Kasin passed away at the hospital.

The game, held at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage, was a fundraiser honoring a fellow student who had died in a car accident the previous year. An investigation into Kasin’s death is ongoing.

The Incident

Kasin collapsed during an intermission while playing with the varsity hockey team. Bystanders, including spectators and teammates, administered CPR until first responders arrived. Tragically, he was pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital. The cause of his death remains unknown, and Nassau County police are investigating.

Remembering Connor

Coaches, friends, and family described Kasin as a standout both on and off the ice. Jeff Tempone, Kasin’s travel team coach for the Long Island Sharks, called him "a coach’s dream" and praised his physical conditioning, work ethic, and team spirit.

  • Coach Tempone: "He was just a great kid, highly coachable, and always encouraging his teammates on the bench. It’s devastating—he had his whole life ahead of him."

Charity Game in Context

The game honored Sabrina Navaretta, a Syosset High School graduate who died in a car accident. The Navaretta family, who spearhead a foundation in Sabrina’s memory, expressed their condolences to the Kasin family.

  • Navaretta Family Statement: "Our family extends our condolences to Connor’s family, teammates, friends, and the community. We know the heartbreak you are going through and will be here for you."

Support from the School and Community

Massapequa High School has mobilized grief counselors to help students and staff cope with the loss. Superintendent William Brennan shared a heartfelt message with the community:

  • Brennan's Letter: "Connor was known for his kindness, positivity, and big smile. All of us will feel his absence deeply. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this challenging time."

The hockey community, local leaders, and professional teams also offered their condolences:

  • Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman: "My deepest condolences to the Massapequa community, especially Connor’s loved ones, friends, and teammates."

  • New York Islanders Statement: "Our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and teammates of Connor Kasin, a beloved member of the hockey community."

Flags were lowered at the skating center in Kasin’s memory.

The Ripple Effect

Kasin’s death has left a lasting impact on his teammates, coaches, and the broader community. His high school coaches described him as one of the most dedicated and spirited players they had ever worked with.

  • Coach Tempone: "The hockey community is small but powerful, and the outpouring of love and support reflects how special Connor was."

As the investigation continues, the Massapequa community remains united in honoring Kasin’s memory and supporting his family.
