California Man Dies in Tragic Electrocution While Hanging Christmas Lights

What Happened

A 24-year-old California man, Antonio Pascual, was fatally electrocuted on November 21 while hanging Christmas lights on a roof in Escondido. According to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office, Pascual came into contact with a high-voltage power line, leading to his death.

He was found hanging upside down from a tree when first responders arrived. Despite efforts to save him, Pascual was pronounced dead at the hospital. The cause of death was ruled as high-voltage electrocution.

Rescue Delayed by Powerline Danger

Family members revealed that Pascual remained trapped in the tree for nearly an hour while first responders waited for the power company to shut off electricity. By the time rescue attempts resumed, it was too late to save him.

Family and Community Response

A GoFundMe campaign started by Pascual’s family describes him as a caring son, brother, and uncle. His family plans to transport his body to Guatemala, where his mother resides, for burial.

"Christmas lights will forever mean something special to his family," the fundraiser noted, highlighting Pascual’s role as a devoted family member who supported his loved ones.

Safety Concerns Highlighted by Utility Company

San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) issued a statement expressing condolences to Pascual’s family. While the company refrained from sharing specific details due to the ongoing investigation, it emphasized public safety around power lines.

SDG&E advises:

  • Always be aware of surroundings near overhead power lines.

  • Maintain a 10-foot distance from all electric lines when using tools, machinery, or equipment.

  • Contact SDG&E if power lines are in your work area to explore options such as temporary shutdowns or line coverings.

The Bigger Picture

This tragedy underscores the dangers of working near power lines, particularly during the holiday season. Experts urge homeowners to take extra precautions and seek professional help when hanging decorations near electrical infrastructure.

For the Pascual family, Antonio’s untimely death has left a profound void. As they work to honor his memory, their loss serves as a somber reminder to prioritize safety during festive preparations.
