State Department Official Resigned Over US Support For Israel’s Assault On Gaza

Amidst the tension of the Israel-Gaza conflict, another Department of State official has resigned to protest the US Government’s silence on a plausible genocide. This Wednesday, Annelle Sheline, a State Department official working in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, submitted her resignation. This has been the most significant protest resignation over Biden’s support for Israel’s atrocities since Josh Paul’s resignation in last October as a senior state department officer.

In an interview with CNN, Annelle said, “For the past year, I worked for the office devoted to promoting human rights in the Middle East. I believe strongly in the mission and in the important work of the office. However, as a representative of the government that is directly enabling what the International Court of Justice has said could plausibly be a genocide in Gaza, such work has become almost impossible. Unable to serve as an administration that enables such atrocities, I have decided to resign from my position at the Department of State.”

Sheline believes that the actions that the Israeli military is taking are seeking to wipe out the population of Gaza. She was a foreign officer at the Department of State for one year, mainly promoting peace and human rights in the Middle East. When asked about what inspired her to protest through resignation, she mentioned the last social post of Aaron Bushnell, a 25-year-old US Air Force serviceman who self-immolated in front of the Israeli embassy in Washington on February 25, 2024.

Annelle said his last social media post haunted her every day, where he wrote, “Many of us like to ask ourselves what would I do if I was alive during Slavery or the Jim Crow South or Apartheid? What would I do if my country is committing genocide? The answer is you are doing it right now.”

Annelle revealed that she didn’t originally plan to resign publicly. However, many of her co-workers who share her opinions requested her to speak up and resign publicly.
