What Happened?
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced Thursday that Ashley Moody, the state’s attorney general, will fill the Senate seat vacated by Marco Rubio. Rubio is President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of State.
DeSantis revealed the appointment during a news conference in Orlando, praising Moody’s service as Florida’s top law enforcement officer. "Ashley has honorably served our people, and I am confident she will represent Florida effectively in the Senate," DeSantis said.
Why It Matters?
The appointment comes at a pivotal time, with DeSantis emphasizing the urgency for Washington to "deliver results for the American people." DeSantis called Trump’s recent election victory a "mandate for change," underscoring the need for action on key Republican priorities, including border security and government reform.
Who is Ashley Moody?
Ashley Moody, 49, has served as Florida’s attorney general since 2019. Known for her alignment with DeSantis and Trump’s policies, Moody has been a vocal supporter of conservative initiatives, particularly on law enforcement and immigration.
Her Senate appointment will last until a special election in 2026, with the winner of that election completing the remainder of Rubio’s term. The seat will be up for election again in 2028.
The Selection Process
DeSantis outlined specific criteria for his choice, stating he sought a senator who would:
Support Trump’s agenda.
Strengthen immigration and border policies.
Address the federal bureaucracy’s inefficiencies.
Commit to reducing federal spending.
DeSantis considered several candidates before selecting Moody, including Trump’s daughter-in-law Lara Trump, Lt. Governor Jeanette Nunez, and former Florida House Speaker Jose Olivia. Lara Trump recently removed herself from consideration.
What’s Next?
Rubio, who has served in the Senate since 2011, is expected to resign after Trump’s inauguration next week. His nomination as Secretary of State has been well-received, with his foreign policy experience expected to ease Senate confirmation.
Moody’s appointment marks the start of her transition to a national platform, where she will be tasked with advancing conservative priorities and supporting the Trump administration's agenda.
As DeSantis stated, “Florida deserves a Senator who will help deliver on President Trump’s mandate for change.”
