Gates Commits to Giving Away His Fortune

Bill Gates has announced that he plans to donate almost all of his personal fortune to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He stated that he no longer wants to be among the world’s richest individuals and that he has a moral obligation to return his wealth to society.

In a message released with the foundation’s annual report, Gates called this commitment part of his “life’s work” and reaffirmed his dedication to fighting inequality through global health, education, and climate-focused efforts.

Major Financial Shift for the Foundation

This year, Gates will transfer $8.6 billion to the foundation. The organization plans to increase its annual budget from $6 billion to $9 billion by 2026 to expand its reach and impact. Much of its work targets vaccine access, disease prevention, maternal health, and sanitation—especially in low-income countries.

Gates said the increase in spending is intended to meet the urgent challenges that have emerged globally in recent years, including pandemics and food insecurity.

Role of Warren Buffett and Governance Reform

Warren Buffett, a longtime friend and supporter of Gates, has contributed over $36 billion to the foundation. Gates credited Buffett’s philanthropy as a major force behind the foundation’s scale and success.

To ensure long-term sustainability, Gates noted changes in the foundation’s governance, including an expanded board. These changes are designed to prepare the foundation for a time when neither he nor Melinda French Gates will be involved in its daily operations. The couple divorced in 2021 but have continued their collaboration in the foundation, at least through 2025.

Global Legacy and Influence

The Gates Foundation, established in 2000, is now one of the most powerful philanthropic organizations in the world. Since its inception, it has spent more than $70 billion on causes ranging from education and disease eradication to agricultural development.

Gates expressed hope that other ultra-wealthy individuals would follow this model of large-scale giving to address the world’s most pressing problems. He emphasized that wealth should serve a broader purpose beyond individual accumulation.
